Cash assets, also called liquid assets, are funds available to you now
because they are not tied up in long-term investments. Instead of letting
your cash sit idle day after day, you have the opportunity to put it to
work for you through a money market mutual fund.
This means that in addition to any cash you deposit directly, monies may
be transferred automatically (swept) into your money market account when
a security is sold or an interest or dividend payment is made, etc. Similarly,
the amount necessary to pay for any security purchase will automatically
be deducted from your money market account, unless you specifically request
otherwise.
One of the benefits of paying for securities in this manner is that it
relieves you of the need to send a check assuring you that your money
fund balance will continue to earn dividends until settlement date.
An Automated Clearing House (ACH) transfer can also be used to directly
deposit dividend and interest checks to your bank account. If you choose
to have a check issued instead of using the ACH transfer, checks are only
sent once a month.
Why are more and more investors putting a portion of their investment
dollars into money market funds? Here are five of the most popular reasons:
- Safety -- Money market funds invest in a diversified pool of
high quality, short-term securities.
- Liquidity -- You can redeem shares and get your money the same
day.
- Stability of principal -- The funds attempt to keep their value
at a table $1 price per share. An investment in the Funds is not
insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) or any other
government agency. Although the Funds seek to preserve the value
of your investment at $1.00 per share, it is possible to lose money
by investing in the Funds.
- Yields superior to bank products --Money market mutual funds
typically provide higher yields than bank-guaranteed products such as
CDs, money market deposit accounts, or interest on personal checking
or savings accounts.
- Checkbook conveniences -- Simply use your checks to access
the balance in your money market account.
Whether you're between investments
and need a safe place to hold your money, looking for a better way to
earn interest on excess cash from your business, or seeking a better yield
combined with checkbook, money market funds may be an ideal financial
fit for you.
